"Just because I can't help a hundred, doesn't exclude me from helping one" Rick Warren

Last Friday, May 19th, 2012, Static Salon volunteered to do hair and make up for a fashion show at "A Women's Day In The Park". An annual event the Downtown Women's Center puts on for the women who frequent the center and whom are members.
While we did hair and make up on these ladies they shared their stories with us. I can't explain how humbling this experience was. I am so glad that I was a part of this event. The women that attended this event were introduced to different health and legal services.

The women who come to the Downtown Women's Center are homeless, formerly homeless, or experiencing extreme poverty; they cope with mental and chronic illnesses, physical disabilities, chronic abuse and domestic violence, as well as aging related-issues.

There are 71 apartment style rooms at the center. The average women is a member of the DWC for 7-9 years. About 200 women visit the drop-in Day Center each day. The ladies can take advantage of many services the DWC has to offer, including: meals, showers, computers, telephones, mail, and counseling.

This is a mural at the Downtown Women's Center of the two ladies who started it all. This mural is created by the thumb prints of all the ladies who stayed at the shelter when it first opened. It is also signed by everyone.

Vidal Sassoon

Vidal Sassoon, one of the greatest Hair Legends passed away earlier this morning.

"When I first came into hair, women were coming in and you'd place a hat on their hair and you'd dress their hair around it," says Sassoon. "We learned to put discipline in the haircuts by using actual geometry, actual architectural shapes and bone structure. The cut had to be perfect and layered beautifully, so that when a woman shook it, it just fell back in."

Vidal Sassoon changed the world of hairdressing, by creating amazing, detailed work, that inspired millions. Vidal Sassoon is a beauty icon, that will forever remain in our hearts and an inspiration to our daily work.

Doing our part to help keep the Earth Clean

Last weekend Static Salon teamed up with AVEDA and The Surfrider Foundation
to help clean up the Earth. The girls at Static Salon met the Surfrider Foundation
and members of the AVEDA team at the Santa Ana River Bed,
to pick up trash.

Every year Static Salon and  AVEDA partner with the Surfrider Foundation during Earth Month to raise money in fight for clean water and in awareness to keep the Earth clean.

Happy Earth Month!

April is Earth Month!
Earth month is especially important to us at Static Salon. Every year we team up with AVEDA and the Surfrider Foundation to help raise money in the fight for clean water and to protect our beautiful Mother Earth.

Since 1999, AVEDA has raised over 22 Million dollars to protect our earth and its peoples. In the last 5 years 16 Million dollars of the funds have supported clean water projects at home and around the world.

Even though Earth Month is just one month out of the year, we celebrate all year long by being an environmentally friendly company which continuously gives back to society. We believe in treating ourselves, each other, and the planet with care and respect. Social responsibility is our responsibility.

There are hundreds of small steps we, as individuals, can take to help protect our Mother Earth and to make it a better place.

Every day this month AVEDA is posting a 'fun fact' about how you can take action and help spread the word about Earth Month. Here's the link:

AVEDA's limited edition, 'Light the way' candles are available at Static Salon. 100% of the purchase price goes to the foundation to help fight for clean water.

Frizzy hair driving you crazy?

Summer is coming and who doesn't want easy hair during the summer? Keratin Smoothing Treatments create smooth, frizz-free, easy to blow dry hair.

Over the past couple years we have been doing Keratin Smoothing Treatments at the salon. Our clients have fallen in love with these treatments, giving them the perfect answer to unruly, frizzy hair.

So here's the scoop about why these Keratin Smoothing Treatments are so amazing.

These treatments are Keratin based. Keratin is a protein, which is great for your hair. The Keratin Treatment smooths your hair shaft and reduces frizz and curl. This treatment will not take the curl out of your hair, but it will relax it a little. Which will make it easier and faster to style your hair.

We offer two types of Keratin Treatments.
The 1st treatment will last about 6 weeks. The 2nd treatment can last up to 6 months. Keratin Treatments are not a permanent hair straightening system. But are a great way to control frizz and make your hair easier to manage.

Braids Braids Braids!

Fishtail and French Braids aren't just for little girls anymore. This braid craze has taken the beauty world by storm. Braids are everywhere! Including the red carpet.  I am super excited about the braid frenzy that is going on! I love braids. A simple braid can add a little or a lot of drama to your daily hair. Braids are also a quick and easy way to keep your hair out of your face and perfect for the beach!

Here's a few tips on how to make your braid look fashionable:
1. Have clean or one day dirty hair. If your hair is more than a day dirty will be too greasy and won't separate as easily.
2. Braid your hair like normal, in which ever braid style you choose
 (regular, fishtail or french)
3. Secure ends with an elastic band
4. Go through the braid and loosen it up.. gently pull on the braid so it looks a little messy
5. Add a little hair spray and your braid is all set!
